Loft is the angle of upward slant of the clubface measured in degrees. The loft of the club, combined with the club weighting, helps determine the angle at which the ball is launched and the amount of backspin on the ball. These two factors govern the trajectory of the resultant ball flight. Given the same club weighting, the lower the loft, the lower the ball will fly. The more loft a club has, the higher the ball will fly.
Choosing the right shaft material is a matter of feel and weight. Graphite shafts are usually lighter in weight than steel and can provide more clubhead speed with the same effort. Graphite also transmits less shock to your hands at impact, which can translate to less fatigue during your round. Graphite shafts are usually available in a larger selection of flex options as well. In general, the consistency of steel shafts make them the most popular option for irons, while lightweight graphite shafts remain the most popular choice for drivers and fairway woods.
